When you are thinking about how to work overseas you have to think about why you want to go? Do you need to make some good money in a short time or are you looking to travel abroad a bit and see what the world has to offer? Are you bored? Do you need a change? You need to decide what your reason is for going, and you can make the rest of your decisions based on this.

Where do you want to go and are you able to go there? This may seem like a pretty logical question – but you have to think about things like visas and safety. Obviously if you wish to travel to a country in the middle of a war – this is not a good idea (unless you are an extreme backpacker). When you live abroad you need to think about things like language, job availability, housing, cost of living but don’t stress ! You can do it! Think about that place you have always dreamed of traveling to and research it.

Do some research – you have a fair idea of the country/ countries that you would like to live and work abroad in. Now go and buy a lonely planet, get on line and do some research. Look at forums, talk to other people who work abroad. Get a passport if you don’t already have one – this will inspire you. Start reading up on the place you want to work abroad. Where and how are you going to live, start looking at overseas jobs. Do your research!

Step 4 – How to Work Abroad = WHAT?
Decide on getting a job before you go or getting a job when you get there. This can be difficult – ALWAYS – start looking for something before you go – contact people or organizations and talk to them about work opportunities. Sometimes they will say no (depending on the job) because you are not in the country yet, and sometimes they will organise your job, visa, accommodation, and even pick you up from the airport! Maybe you have to get your own visa, and organize everything yourself which is also fun, but tell them you are coming – make your contacts early – so when you get there you have a better chance of getting a job.
You also need to have a back up plan – what are you going to do if you can’t get work straight away? Are there other jobs that you can do until you get the one you want? Think outside the box – the job you are looking for does not have to be the same as the job you have now, what is something that you can do in that country that others can’t. There are lots of overseas jobs out there for people from all walks of life.
Step 5 – How to Work Abroad = WHEN?
Set a date and plan towards it. Start selling or storing your stuff, start saving money, talk to your doctor about going (you may need shots – depending on where you are headed) and just get involved.
